SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA - May 8, 2009 (WPVI) -- 11 people in Southwest Philadelphia, including three children, are being treated in the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The victims live in three homes along the 5600 block of Warrington Avenue. Residents of 5606 Warrington called 9-1-1, after their carbon monoxide detector went off. They got out of their house and were taken to the hospital. Two adults from 5610 Warrington were also taken to the hospital. The seven residents of 5608 Warrington -- the three children live there -- were also taken to the hospital. Investigators say the carbon monoxide came from that home's basement. That's where a gas-powered generator was running without ventilation, as a source of electricity for the entire house. All of the victims were treated and released from the hospital.

Firefighters say the carbon monoxide detector probably saved lives. In January, the city mandated that all homes have carbon monoxide detectors.
