These units replaced the original ones in my home after 20+ years, they simply stopped working. The replacement was very easy, no modifications needed. You know how some 10-minute projects end up taking four hours? The ten-minute project of swapping out one of my existing smoke alarms with a new First Alert took maybe four minutes. So a really nice experience there. The new units have several valuable features their predecessors did not. I'm not using all of these features, such as the advanced connectivity. I just wanted to restore the lost alerting I had with the original 2 interconnected alarms. I also improved my overall system by adding four First Alert battery powered non-interconnected units those were also a breeze to install. A really good feature is the quick disconnect this makes servicing the unit easier, safer, and more efficient because you don't have to undo any wiring to remove the unit. I write for electrical trade magazines, and have often recommended installing this sort of disconnect when replacing lamp ballasts or industrial motors. It's a small investment with big safety and productivity gains. As inexpensive as this unit was, the inclusion of the connector was a nice bonus. I really like the AC power indicator. The one in this unit is a big improvement over the one in the original units. This one gives off a dim, soft green glow. Now at a glance I can tell if these units are providing protection. I also like the fact the indicator provides enough light for the hallway at night though not so much that light spills into other rooms. I tried the alarm button on each unit before and after installing. The noise is suitably loud and annoying, just as it should be. I don't want something that gives me pleasant dreams while the house is burning down around me, I want something that jars me awake. I'm pretty sure this will do the job. With sustained holding of this alarm, my cat bolts for her cat door and leaves the house. Was this an intended, tested feature? What a comfort to a pet custodian to know this is what happens! This unit even has a 10-year warranty, which is pretty impressive.

Our smoke alarm had lived a long and useful life but when it came time to replace it, I couldn't find the most recent/comparable model. I called First Alert and the rep was very helpful and professional. Based on his recommendation, I purchased a new smoke alarm which is working perfectly!!!
