First Alert Home Safety Awareness Sweepstakes
Smoke Alarm Safety Starts with Everyday Awareness
While this First Alert Home Safety Awareness Contest has ended, smoke alarm safety remains an important part of protecting your home and family. Proper alarm placement, routine testing, and timely replacement can help provide early warning in the event of a fire.
Why Smoke Alarms Matter
Smoke alarms are one of the most important safety devices in the home. They help alert your household to smoke and fire hazards, giving everyone more time to respond and follow a fire escape plan.
Smoke Alarm Safety Checklist
Use this smoke alarm safety checklist as a simple reminder to review your home’s fire protection setup.
- Install smoke alarms inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.
- Test smoke alarms regularly using the test button.
- Replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Keep alarms clean and free of dust, debris, and paint.
- Replace smoke alarms when they reach the end of their recommended service life.
- Make sure everyone in the home recognizes the sound of the alarm.
Where to Install Smoke Alarms
For better protection, smoke alarms should be placed throughout the home, especially near sleeping areas. Many homes benefit from alarms in bedrooms, hallways, living spaces, basements, and each level of the home. Always follow the installation instructions for your specific First Alert alarm model.
When to Replace Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms do not last forever. Over time, sensors can become less effective, which is why it is important to check the manufacture date and replace older alarms according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If an alarm is chirping, damaged, expired, or not responding to testing, it may be time for a replacement.
Create a Fire Escape Plan
Smoke alarms provide early warning, but every household also needs a plan. Identify two ways out of each room, choose a safe meeting place outside, and practice your escape plan with everyone in the home.
